My name is Makena German and I created this website with my parents because it's what I wish existed when I was a Little League baseball player. Today I am a sophomore in high school and play on my school's Junior Varsity baseball team. But for many years I have been the only girl playing on my Little League, Junior League, Club Ball, and now High School teams.
When I was 12 years old, in my last year of Little League, I knew I wanted to keep on playing baseball, but I had no idea how I would do that beyond the developmental and inclusive environment of Little League. Other players, adults, and even coaches told me that there was "no future" for me in baseball, that I should "switch to softball" and that "baseball is for boys and softball is for girls." It would have been easier to listen to them and just transition to softball (and I even tried playing both for a few years) but I didn't want to give up baseball - the game I love.
Then my parents discovered Baseball for All (BFA) - an amazing organization with the goal of growing the number of girls who play baseball and stay in baseball. Through BFA, I discovered an entire girls' baseball community that provided me (and my parents) with the friendship, support and courage to ignore the negativity and keep playing baseball. In the past few years, I played at Cooperstown with an all-girls team, I've had opportunities to play baseball internationally as a BFA Ambassador, I've been invited to participate in MLB Develops programming where I had the privilege to be coached by Team USA and MLB coaches, and I've earned my Junior Coach certification. Every day I am actively striving towards my goal of playing for the USA Women's National Team and in the new Women's Professional Baseball League (WPBL).
There are so many opportunities for girls in baseball today. No girl should have to give up on playing baseball because she doesn't think she has a choice or a future in the game. I hope you find this website useful - I tried to include all the information and links to resources my parents and I wish we knew back when I was 12. Please reach out with good ideas to grow this site, we'd love to hear from you.
Keep playing baseball girls!
Makena
